2024 Spring CCSF Math 110A-863 CRN 31760 Information

2024 Spring CCSF Math 110A-863 (CRN 31760) Hybrid Online & In-Person

This section of Math 110A is scheduled to be 50% online with class meetings on Thursdays, 8:00–10:30am in Arts 316 (at least at the time of this writing; check the Schedule for fresh info).  This class will have regular quizzes and most tests/exams administered through Canvas. The final exam might be conducted in person on the Thursday of Finals week, 8–11am, location TBA or it will be administered through Canvas similar to the other assessments or possibly a combination, partially in-person and partially in Canvas.

The quizzes and tests will be available during suitable deadlines and testing windows. Typically the availability window is 24 hours but students must submit their work within two or two-and-a-half hours of starting. Students must expect to be able to work in Canvas during those times.

Participation Requirement

In order to remain in good standing, students must meet all of these three requirements:

Students who fall out of good standing will be removed from the class. To be reinstated, if even possible, students must usually forfeit a quiz score.

Textbook

Students must purchase or have regular access (e.g., by using the reserve copies in the Library) to the text: Calculus (Early Transcendentals) by Stewart, 8th Edition, ISBN 978-1-285-74155-0.

Required Software

Regular, reliable access to the internet, a browser that works well with Canvas, and (for students who do not own scanners) a scanning app (for creating pdfs as test submissions).

Required and Recommended Materials

Attendance

Attendance Students who are not in good standing risk being dropped.* What does “good standing” mean? Well…

Good Standing & Participation (1) Students must check the website every weekday even if just to look for new information. Logging in once a week for assessments is insufficient. (2) Students must have made regular, substantive contributions in class or in the Canvas Discussions (if there are such) on the course website by the end of the day before each quiz. (3) Students must never score below 10 on two quizzes in a row. Students must not fall out of good standing for lack of participation.

*Those rare students whom I decide to reinstate will usually have to forfeit a quiz score.

Assessments (Tests)

Diagnostics include weekly quizzes, three unit tests, and the Final Exam. The material comes from the textbook, class lectures, and supplemental materials. As of this writing, I plan to make the quizzes and tests available during a 24-hour window. The final exam might be conducted in person on the Thursday of Finals week, 8–11am, location TBA or it will be administered through Canvas similar to the other assessments or possibly a combination, partially in-person and partially in Canvas.
