2023 Spring Math 110A-861 CRN 31760 Information

2023 Spring CCSF Math 110A-861 CRN 31760 Information

This section of Math 110A is scheduled to be 50% online. This class will have weekly quizzes, monthly tests/exams and a final exam, mostly administered through Canvas. See "Assessments" below.

Meetings

I will conduct the online component of this class "on-demand" (asynchronously). We have in-person meetings on Thursdays, 8:10-10:25am (room TBA as of this writing).

Time Commitment

This course requires at least 262.5 hours of work, or 15 hours per week (approximately 2 of which will be our in-person meetings). That's a decent part-time job! Students must be prepared to dedicate that much time to studying, practicing, and taking tests.

Participation Requirement

In order to remain in good standing, students must meet all of these three requirements:

  • Log into Canvas every weekday, even if just for a few minutes, to check for Announcements and new Discussion prompts.

  • Participate in the section's Canvas shell regularly with substantive posts in the discussion forums. There are prompts to follow and deadlines to meet.

  • Never score 25% or less on two quizzes in a row.

Students who fall out of good standing will be removed from the class. To be reinstated, if even possible, students must usually forfeit a quiz score.

Textbook

Students must purchase or have regular access (e.g., by using the reserve copies in the Library) to the text: Calculus (Early Transcendentals) by Stewart, 8th Edition, ISBN 978-1-285-74155-0.

Required Software

Just regular, reliable access to the internet and a browser.

Required Materials

  • I recommend purchasing a ruler (for drawing number lines) and some graph paper.

  • I allow calculators except when I say otherwise in an item’s instructions. Students should not use graphing utilities for assessment items that test graphing skills.

  • Students should do their homework faithfully and keep their work neatly in a binder dedicated to this class.

  • People requesting a special service (e.g., grade appeal, recommendation letter, reinstatement) must submit their homework binders to me immediately. I do not accept late or incomplete submissions.

Attendance

Attendance I will drop/withdraw students who are not in good standing.* What does “good standing” mean? Well…

Good Standing & Participation (1) Students must check the website every weekday even if just to look for new information. Logging in once in a while for assessments is insufficient. (2) Students must make regular, substantive Discussion contributions in Canvas, meeting the stated deadlines. (3) Students must never score below 10 on two quizzes in a row. Students must not fall out of good standing for lack of participation.

*Those rare students whom I decide to reinstate will usually have to forfeit a quiz score.

Assessments (Tests)

Diagnostics include weekly quizzes, three unit tests, and the Final Exam. The material comes from the textbook, class lectures, and supplemental materials. As of this writing, I plan to make the quizzes available for 24 hours starting on Tuesday mornings, due within two hours of starting or by Wednesday morning, whichever is earlier. The unit tests will be given during in-person classes. The typical quiz window is two hours. The typical test window is two and a half hours. If the final exam is online, it will be in two two-hour parts. If the fin al exam is in-person, the date is TBA as of this writing but probably the morning of Thursday, May 18.
