CDEV 87 Course Description

This 16 week, 3 unit class covers strategies to promote children's social and emotional development and tools to address challenging behaviors and mental health needs. Course includes interrelated levels of practice in developing positive relationships with children, families and colleagues; creating supportive environments; utilizing social and emotional teaching strategies to provide intensive, individualized interventions. Asynchronous ONLINE class with NO in person sessions.

ESL 182 or ENGL 88 or placement in ESL 184 or readiness for college-level English.

CDEV 87: Promoting Social & Emotional Competence inYoung Children

Student Learning Outcomes 

Upon completion of this course, a student will be able to: 

Identify and assess young children's social and emotional development and develop appropriate strategies to prevent challenging behaviors.

Apply appropriate interventions to meet sample child's social and emotional needs and family's unique interests, strengths and needs to affect positive change.

Implement strategies to promote social and emotional competence in the context of naturally occurring routines and environments.

Examine potential challenges and barriers to implementation of practices that support sample children's social and emotional development, including those with disabilities and the cultural and linguistic diversity of children and families.
