CDEV 8117: Positive Parenting
Study of the role of parents/guardians in the healthy development of children from birth through adolescence. Emphasis on building positive relationships with children in the areas of bonding, attachment, self esteem, family dynamics, age-appropriate expectations and the importance of positive communications. Fulfills court-mandated parent education requirements.
This class and the topics covered are approved by the Department of Human Services Family and Children’s Services for court ordered, reunification, and/or child protective services referred clients.
Upon completion of this course a student will be able to:
Describe the development of children from birth to 18 years old, including factors that impact developmental expectations.
Analyze normative behavior of children from birth to 18 years and parent/guardian responses to common challenges, including the impact of stress and trauma on the brain development of the child and the effects on the family unit.
Explain the importance of ongoing communication between parents/guardians and child care staff, teachers, and health care professionals and utilize communication strategies for assessing the needs of the child.
Identify the value of attachment, bonding, setting limits, and utilizing positive guidance strategies.
Class Days: January 24, 2023 - May 20, 2023.
Class Holidays: 2/17-2/20, 3/7, and 3/25-4/2
