N.J.A.C. 6A:8-3.1(a)5 ii requires district boards of education to provide appropriate K-12 educational services for gifted and talented students. Teachers are asked to complete Rating Scales, create student portfolios to demonstrate performance and/or product, observation from the gifted and talented coordinator, and grades. Therefore, the identification process and appropriate educational challenges begins at the kindergarten level in Mahwah and is ongoing. All teachers are expected to meet the needs of our gifted learners through differentiation of instruction.
In the spring of third grade all students have the opportunity to sit for the accelerated math placement assessment. The assessment was created by a committee of teachers that have taught the accelerated courses in grades 4-8, so they are aware of the content needed to succeed in the rigorous and fast paced setting. There are no study guides or resources given to students, as it is important for students to demonstrate their knowledge and thought process authentically. Teachers complete rating scales and the Standards for Mathematical Practice Form that is aligned with a student's report card. A good way to assess your own child is to look at their report card and see are they earning a majority of 4's in math, demonstrating they are performing above grade level. After all the data is collected, including the local score on the Quantitative Battery of the CogAT a committee meets to determine placement of each individual student. It is very important that each child is placed appropriately for their learning needs and self-confidence. All students who sit for the accelerated math assessment will receive a letter communicating placement for the following year. The letters are typically sent at the end of the school year. For any questions regarding the process you can contact the gifted coordinator, Courtney Carrelha, ccarrelha@mahwah.k12.nj.us or 201-762-2380.
N.J.A.C. 6A:8-3.1(a)5 ii requires district boards of education to provide appropriate K-12 educational services for gifted and talented students. Teachers are asked to complete Renzulli Rating Scales, create student portfolios to demonstrate performance and/or product, observation from the gifted and talented coordinator, and grades. Therefore, the identification process and appropriate educational challenges begins at the kindergarten level in Mahwah. All teachers are expected to meet the needs of our gifted learners through differentiation of instruction.
In the spring of third grade all students sit for the cognitive skills assessment called the CogAT. Teachers complete a Renzulli Rating Scale and present a portfolio of student work. After all the data is collected, a committee meets to deteremine placement of each individual student. It is very important that each child is placed appropriately for their learning needs and self-confidence. All parents will receive a copy of their child's CogAT Profile. We believe in complete transparency, so the report is sent home along with directions on how to interpret the report. Based on national and state recommendation we use local norms in evalution and placement. As suggested through the National Association for Gifted Children and the New Jersey Association of Gifted Children we look at local scores. Local norm comparisons also are consistent with the definition of giftedness first advanced in the influential U.S. Department of Education “National Excellence” report, which recommended identifying student abilities only in comparison “with others of their age, experience, or environment.”
If a student is going to be placed in the gifted and talented program in Joyce Kilmer a letter will be sent home with more information regarding the program. The letters are typically sent at the end of the school year. For any questions regarding the process you can contact the gifted coordinator, Courtney Carrelha, ccarrelha@mahwah.k12.nj.us or 201-762-2380.
Students introduced to the Elements of Art: Line, Shape, Color, Texture, space and Form. Students will be provided with a variety of developmentally appropriate art materials such as paint, crayons, markers and clay to further develop basic fine motor skills while they create expressive works of art. They will also learn vocabulary used in the visual arts (during hands-on activities and explorations. Teachers keep student portfolios of work created in school to demonstrate growth and ability throughout the years.
Throughout the student's years in elementary school the art teachers are creating portfolios of student work. In the winter of the third grade all students are given to art assessments: a creative piece and a still life drawing. These assessments are used to deteremine which students will sit for the Torrence Creativity Test. In the spring of third grade, a committee of art teachers from grades 4-8 and the gifted coordinator evalute student work to deteremine placement into the gifted and talented art program at Joyce Kilmer. The process is ongoing, as the art teachers are asked to create portfolios annually.
We do not accept any art that was created outside of the school.
The JK Gifted and Talented Art Program is designed to enhance each child's artistic abilities, nurture and develop creativity, and provide students the opportunity to engage in a variety of artistic mediums. The program is designed for students in 4th & 5th grade who exhibit artistic, creative talent above their grade level peers.
