General Protocols

TIER 1: When local health officials define the Covid risk level between LOW and MODERATE

TIER 2: When local health officials define the Covid risk level between SEVERE and CRITICAL

The protocols outlined on this page will be followed company wide. This includes daily office workers, actors, and production staff.

Health, Safety, and Covid-19 Supervisor

The Magik Theatre appointed a Health, Safety, and Covid-19 Supervisor to implement and oversee all health and safety policies regarding Covid-19. Shannon Bishop (GM) is the current appointee for this role and is available to assist with any questions, concerns, and will execute the health and safety protocols if a staff member becomes ill (e.g. guidance on testing, contact tracing, and action recommendations to the executive staff).

Temperature Screening

Staff temperature screenings will be required on performance days and rehearsal days, but only for the individuals involved in those activities. If any individual has a fever of 100 degrees or higher they will be required to leave Magik immediately.

Mask Requirements (Tier 1)

All individuals who enter Magik or its auxiliary spaces will be required to wear a properly fitted face mask (covering mouth and nose) at all times while within six feet of one another. Even if an individual is far away from others, they will still be required to have a mask either in their hand or around their neck so they can quickly put it on if necessary. Magik will provide a mask for any individual who does not have one.

Mask Requirements (Tier 2)

All individuals who enter Magik or its auxiliary spaces will be required to wear a properly fitted face mask (covering mouth and nose) at all times while indoors. Masks must be worn regardless of distance from others, including within private offices. Exceptions to this include the following:

  • Eating/drinking

  • Speaking on the phone

  • Video meetings such as Zoom calls

  • While outdoors, if over six feet apart

The above activities should be done away from other individuals. In addition to the kitchenette downstairs and the picnic tables on the South side of the building, tables and chairs will be set up in the lobbies of Magik (when possible) to create an additional break/phone call area.

Medical Exemptions

If a medical condition prevents an individual from being able to comply with this policy, they must speak with the Health, Safety, and Covid-19 Supervisor. Medical documentation will be required.

Acceptable Mask Types

Acceptable mask types- surgical and cloth masks that fit properly over your mouth and nose. KN95 and N95s are also acceptable. Do NOT wear bandanas or gaiters as they are less effective, and do NOT wear masks that have any kind of valves or vents as they can concentrate virally loaded particles and potentially increase the spread of the virus.

Hand Sanitizing

Hand sanitizer will be provided at each entrance/exit to our buildings and staff will be required to sanitize their hands any time they enter any Magik space, including traveling between the two buildings.

Physical Distancing

All work stations will be at least six feet apart from each other and meetings will be held in large spaces to allow for physical distancing.

Food & Drinks

Any kind of shared food will not be allowed unless each item is individually wrapped. All staff members should take their meal breaks away from one another and any communal food prep areas (such as microwaves, toaster ovens, refrigerators, etc.) should be sanitized before and immediately after each use.

Space Restrictions

Certain areas of the building are off-limits to those who are not within a certain department. Additionally, we have established occupancy limits for offices and other shared areas.

  • The shop space, backstage space, dressing rooms, and "the cave" are off limits to staff members who are not a member of the production team or do not office in that area (e.g. education office).

  • The East office of Eager House is limited to only two people at one time (seated at the desk area, otherwise, up to 4 people can occupy the room)

  • The South office of Eager House is limited to only three people at one time

  • The North office of Eager House is limited to only four people at one time

  • The Box Office is limited to only one person at a time.

  • The Group Sales Coordinator office is limited to only one person at a time.

  • The Educator Office is limited to two people at one time.

  • The Production Office is limited to one person at a time.

  • The Dressing Rooms are limited to two people at a time.

  • The "cave" is limited to three people at a time.

Visitation (Tier 1)

All visitors will be required to sign in and out in order to ensure contact tracing. Visitors will also be required to undergo a temperature screening and wear a properly fitted mask at all times.

Visitation (Tier 2)

Visitors will be limited to those who have official business with Magik only. Family, friends, and others will not be permitted to enter Magik facilities without express permission of an immediate supervisor. Visitors will be required to undergo a temperature screening upon entry and wear a properly fitted mask at all times.

Post-Work Questionnaires for Staff

This questionnaire will help log daily contact between individuals so that in the event of an illness, we can determine who is at greatest risk for transmission (contact tracing). This will be a Google Form and a reminder will go out daily. This is only applicable to regular staff- contact tracing between contracted staff members such as actors and designers will be monitored by the Stage Manager.

Anonymous Feedback Form

The Anonymous Feedback Form is available for any staff member to share their concerns with the HSC-19 Supervisor regarding our protocols as well as compliance issues.

Working from Home (full-time staff only)

Staff members are permitted to work from home when necessary to avoid excessive time in the office, as long as schedules are communicated beforehand. We will use Google Calendar’s “out of office” feature in order to mark when we are physically unavailable.

  • Unless an employee is not feeling well, hours working from home should be communicated at least 12 hours in advance with an email to supervisors and a calendar update.

Travel (Tier 1)

While non essential travel should be highly avoided, we will not impose a work from home time period upon the travelling individual’s return. Exceptions may occur if an employee is traveling to a known hot-spot or engaging in especially risky activities (e.g. going to a crowded concert or visiting family in the hospital)

Travel (Tier 2)

Staff members must quarantine themselves for five days after travel outside of Bexar county. This quarantine period must be approved in advance by a supervisor, with the exception of emergencies/essential travel. Employees will be expected to work from home during this period unless PTO is used. Non-essential travel should be limited as much as possible. Certain essential travel may be exempt from this quarantine period based on lowered risk level- e.g. a quick trip to a doctor’s appointment in another county. To request an exemption from quarantine, please speak to the HSC-19 Supervisor and your immediate supervisor.

Outside Work Conduct

We are requesting that all Magik employees continually evaluate their activities outside of the workplace to mitigate health risks. We ask that employees abstain from gatherings outside of an individual’s household, eating or drinking at indoor bars and restaurants, and non-essential travel. Magik is respectful of the risk that an in-person workplace generates at this time and wants to ensure that we keep our work environment as safe as possible. Asking staff members to avoid any risky activity is a vital part of workplace safety.

Disciplinary Actions

Repeated and flagrant breaks with the above protocols may result in disciplinary actions and termination. If an employee would like to file a grievance regarding another employee breaking protocol, they may use the anonymous feedback form or contact the HSC-19 Supervisor directly.
