I'd like to Welcome you to MAEA's Plein Air Event. Our event takes place at both the Spring and Fall Conferences. The following will make it easier for you to have a memorable experience participating in this popular event.
Plein air is the experience of painting outdoors like early French Impressionists, (Monet, Renoir, Degas, and others). Their technique was trying to catch light before it changed. We try to emulate by working quickly, while at the same time reacquainting ourselves with the joy of painting for ourselves, without worrying about curriculum, lesson plans, grading, supervising, monitoring and teaching students about art.
Please review the following rules:
The Plein Air table will be located near the registration desk where you'll be given a 5x7 inch watercolor paper, or you may bring your own. It MUST be stamped or signed by the Plein Air attendant.
All entries MUST be matted. A 5 x 7 inch mat will be provided. At the end, please return your mat to be re-used for next time.
This is a multi-media acceptable event: Watercolors, oil paint, acrylic paint, colored pencils, oil pastels, soft pastels, ink, collage, or mixed media.
One submission per MAEA member.
All entries must be turned in by the deadline at the location established at the conference which is usually noon the next day. Please print clearly on the entry form, usually found in the conference booklet.
Winning entries will be recognized during the awards ceremony and published in the Show Me ART magazine. The First Prize winner’s Art will be published as a banner on the Retired Newsletter.
What to bring:
Watercolors, paintbrushes in an assortment of sizes, papertowels, cups, apron, tape, sponges, a pencil, easel, and folding chair.

FAQ's
What if I don’t like what I painted? Please enter anyway! It’s good practice to enter in events and can be used on your Curriculum Vitae (CV).
Do I have to participate in Plein Air? No, you do not have to participate.
Can I use my own watercolor paper or canvas? Yes, but it must be signed or stamped at the Plein Air table and you must use your own mat/frame if your paper or canvas is larger than 5 x 7 inches. We do have an assortment of 5 x 7 inch mats provided.
What if I mess up on the watercolor paper, can I have another sheet of paper? Yes! But must be signed or stamped at the Plein Air table.
Can I take photographs if I run out of time? Yes, you may use photos from your camera as a reference for your artwork in case of inclement weather.
Can I get started early before the time of registration? No, this gives all entrants a chance to start at the same time. Many teachers or members travel a long distance, this allows them an equal amount of time to participate.
What if I forget my paint or other supplies? Sometimes there may be items available at the Plein Air table from supplies that have been donated for this event.
