When Creon ruled, a big misfortune covered Thebes. Actually Hera had sent a Sphinx, which had a woman’s head, the breast, the legs and the tail of a lion and bird’s wings. After having learnt about the riddle from the Muses, Creon proposed that to the Thebans. The riddle was: what is that thing that has only one voice, is four-footed, then two-footed and then three-footed?
After that, the Thebans couldn’t find (the answer).
After kidnapping the Thebans, she devoured them.
Because a lot of them were killed, Creon announced that the one who would solve the riddle, would receive the kingdom and Laius’ daughter as a wife.
Oedipus listened and solved the riddle saying that the solution is “man”.
So he said that it was the baby having four feet, crawling on four limbs, growing up walking on two legs, getting old using a stick as a third leg.
