The tasks listed on the following pages are rich tasks from various sources that may be used with multi-level groups or students who are working at a particular level.

Digit jigsaw

Materials: Activity card.

Activity: Teacher to cut the activity card into individual jigsaw pieces. Students then reassemble into counting order.

Counting strip

Materials: Two worksheets per student, red and blue pencils.

Activity: Students count and point to the numbers on the first worksheet. Ask the students to cut the individual boxes so that the numbers are separated. The students then count and match the numbers using the second uncut counting strip. On the second strip students colour odd numbers red and even numbers blue. Compare with a partner. Discussion to follow about zero as an odd or even number.

Before bingo

Materials: One bingo board per student, counters.

Activity: Students choose four numbers between 0 and 10. Teacher plays bingo using number cards 0 to 10. Play by drawing cards and saying the number names, then play again with the drawn cards screened so the students can’t see them. Teacher (or other student) gives number clues such as ‘The number before 6’ or ‘The number after 2’, up to 10. Students cover their numbers when called, until all numbers are covered and bingo is achieved.

Mystery mail

Materials: Ten envelopes with clue cards inside, ten shoeboxes numbered.

Activity: Students open each envelope and determine which house the mail belongs to, and ‘post’ it into that house.
