Counting Growth Points activities

The tasks listed on the following pages are rich tasks from various sources that may be used with multi-level groups or students who are working at a particular level.

6. Extending and applying counting skills

Can count from a non-zero starting point by any single-digit number, and can apply counting skills in practical task.

Jigsaw numbers

Materials: Activity card.

Activity: Cut the hundreds chart along the bold lines. Each student is given a piece on which they complete the missing digits. Students then combine their pieces to reproduce the hundreds chart.

Counting patterns

Materials: Set of nine worksheets per group.

Activity: Students colour the numbers in a counting pattern (e.g. 2s on the hundreds chart). Discuss the pattern that is made. Repeat for 3s, 4s, 5s and so on to 10s. Use a different colour for each pattern.

Variation: Using an interactive screen, the teacher shows a blank hundreds chart with a pattern shown using transparent counters. Students name counting patterns from the pattern of counters, without the use of the numerals. (Online tools such as SPLAT could also be used.)
