Welcome to First Aid at Mac.Rob.
In the event a student or staff member requires medical assistance, Mac.Rob maintains a full-time First Aid Officer to attend to their needs. The First Aid Officer is responsible for:
Attending medical or accident/incident emergencies that take place at the school and assisting where a student is unable to ambulate to the First Aid office.
Maintaining student medical records.
Storing and administering prescription medication for students.
Alerting staff to students with medical conditions, including anaphylactic/asthmatic students in their care when on excursions and camps.
Maintaining first aid room and first aid stations around the school in accordance with DE regulations.
Distributing first aid information and health alerts relating to staff and student wellbeing.
Monitoring weather and environmental health risks and assisting with the dissemination of information and education to the school community
Ensuring staff have knowledge of Mac.Rob’s first aid policies and procedures, and that this information is current.
First Aid is located on the Ground Level of the Kingsway Building. The First Aid Officer, Paula (Pauline) Glover, is available to assist students and staff between 8:00am and 4:30pm, Monday-Friday.
Medication is not dispensed to students unless a Medication Authority Form is signed by a medical practitioner with a request to store medication for a student to access. This form has very clear and specific guidelines, and applies to all kinds of medication, including prescription medication. This form is required for the First Aid Officer to administer all forms of prescription medicine to students. With the exception of Ventolin and Anaphylaxis auto-injectors, students are not permitted to store and administer their own medication while at school.
__________
As-required medication such as Ventolin, Ibuprofen, Antihistamines, and Panadol are not to be given to students without parent permission. (Pain-relief drugs such as Panadol are potentially toxic medication and any pain relief given may mask symptoms that will make a medical assessment by a practitioner difficult. Panadol abuse by some students has occurred in the past either mistakenly or on purpose.)
Use of Panadol: If a student presents to First Aid with pain, the First Aid Officer will discuss treatment options with the student. Panadol may be administered, provided a medication form has been signed by parents. All severe pain will always be reported to the parent/guardian, and emergency services (000) will be called where severe pain and/or coinciding symptoms are also present.
Use of Antihistamines: If a student presents to First Aid with allergies such as hay-fever, the First Aid Officer will discuss treatment options with the student. An antihistamine may be administered, provided a medication form has been signed by parents. All severe allergic reactions will always be reported to the parent/guardian, and emergency services (000) will be called where severe and/or coinciding symptoms are also present.
Use of Ventolin: Students may store and use their own Ventolin inhalers while at school, but should report all symptoms of asthma (and inhaler use) to the First Aid Officer.
Use of EpiPens / Auto-Injectors: Students may store and use their own EpiPens / Auto-Injectors while at school, but must report all symptoms of anaphylaxis to their teacher and the First Aid Officer.
If your child regularly takes any prescription medication or as-required medication of any kind, parents must complete a Medication Authority Form for it to be given to student.
First Aid Location.
First Aid is located in Kingsway Building,
between to the Kingsway doors (Entry 5) and K1.03.
Students with Anaphylaxis, Asthma or Allergies are required to complete the relevant action plan (linked below) which outlines important responses and actions to be taken in the event of a medical emergency. These conditions are potentially life threatening, and we require you to provide a copy of an action plan to comply with our Duty of Care to your student.
__________
Where students have existing or temporary medical conditions, it is a good idea to complete a general Student Medical Action Plan to assist First Aid staff in providing care to your student. This may include clotting disorders, high/low blood pressure, POTS, cerebral palsy, diabetes, epilepsy / seizures, and mental health disorders, or other general conditions that contribute your your student's health.
This plan is an opportunity for you to describe your student's conditions and symptoms, outline any medication they may be taking, and provide information about how we can care for them during a medical episode (including who to call) in as much or as little detail as you feel comfortable disclosing.
The information you provide can be invaluable in the event of an emergency, and greatly assist us and emergency services staff to ensure your child receives the appropriate care. All plans are confidential, and will only be accessed by Mac.Rob first aid staff.
Click the button below to download the Action Plan template. Please complete the plan (either digitally or in hardcopy), and provide the First Aid Officer with a copy for their records.
