The Mac.Robertson Girls’ High School understands the importance of providing helpful and timely responses to common enquiries from parents and carers. To ensure that members of our school community are directed to the most appropriate person to assist them, the policy (left) outlines key contacts for common queries, and sets communication expectations for our students, families, and staff.
Expectations for Families:
If you email a staff member, please ensure you schedule send it, so they receive it during work hours (8:20am - 4:20pm, Monday to Friday). Staff may choose to respond to your emails outside of their work hours, but you should not expect them to do so. A response within 2 working days (if a staff member is not absent) is the expected time frame. Staff members will activate an ‘Out of Office’ message if they are absent from work, so that you are aware their response may be delayed and it will direct you to where you can seek assistance for urgent matters.
Please note, staff work hours are from 8:20am - 4:20pm. This policy allows for emails to be sent from 8:00am to help ensure staff see emails prior to departing for class, although this may not always be guaranteed.
When absent staff will communicate that there may be delays in their response, and provide alternative avenues of assistance by putting Out of Office messages on their email.
Attend medical or accident/incident emergencies that take place at the school and assist where a student is unable to ambulate to the first aid office.
Maintain student’s medical records.
Alert staff to students with a medical condition.
Keep records of staff’s first aid certificates, alert staff to expiry dates of certificates. Ensure Mac.Rob meets the requirements for First Aid training of staff.
Alert staff to anaphylactic/ asthmatic or students with a medical condition in their care when on excursions and camps.
Maintain all first aid sites around the school and make available school first aid kits to teachers on excursions and camps.
Maintain first aid room in accordance with regulations.
Distribute First Aid information and health alerts relating to staff and student wellbeing.
Monitor weather and environmental health risks and alert principal staff and assist with the dissemination of information and education to the school community
Ensure staff have knowledge of Mac.Rob’s first aid policy and procedures and the information is current.
First Aid is located in Kingsway Building,
between to the Staff Toilets and K1.03.
Prescription Medicine.
Medication is not dispensed to students unless a Medication Authority Form is signed by a medical practitioner with a request to store medication for a student to access. This form has very clear and specific guidelines, and applies to all kinds of medication, including prescription medication. This form is required for the First Aid Officer to administer all forms of prescription medicine to students. With the exception of Ventolin and Anaphylaxis auto-injectors, students are not permitted to store and administer their own medication while at school.
As-Required Medication (Ventolin, Ibuprofen, Panadol).
As-required medication such as Ventolin, Ibuprofen, Antihistamines, and Panadol are not to be given to students without parent permission. (Pain-relief drugs such as Panadol are potentially toxic medication and any pain relief given may mask symptoms that will make a medical assessment by a practitioner difficult. Panadol abuse by some students has occurred in the past either mistakenly or on purpose.)
Use of Panadol: If a student presents to Sick Bay with pain, the First Aid Officer will discuss treatment options with the student. Panadol may be administered, provided a medication form has been signed by parents. All severe pain will always be reported to the parent/guardian, and emergency services (000) will be called where severe pain and/or coinciding symptoms are also present.
Use of Antihistamines: If a student presents to Sick Bay with allergies such as hay-fever, the First Aid Officer will discuss treatment options with the student. An antihistamine may be administered, provided a medication form has been signed by parents. All severe allergic reactions will always be reported to the parent/guardian, and emergency services (000) will be called where severe and/or coinciding symptoms are also present.
Use of Ventolin: Students may store and use their own Ventolin inhalers while at school, but should report all symptoms of asthma (and inhaler use) to the First Aid Officer.
Use of EpiPens / Auto-Injectors: Students may store and use their own EpiPens / Auto-Injectors while at school, but must report all symptoms of anaphylaxis to their teacher and the First Aid Officer.
If your child regularly takes any prescription medication or as-required medication of any kind, parents must complete a Medication Authority Form for it to be given to student.
Anaphylaxis, Asthma or Allergies
Students with Anaphylaxis, Asthma or Allergies are required to complete the relevant action plan (linked below) which outlines important responses and actions to be taken in the event of a medical emergency. These conditions are potentially life threatening, and we require you to provide a copy of an action plan to comply with our Duty of Care to your student.
__________
General Medical Action Plans
Where students have existing or temporary medical conditions, it is a good idea to complete a General Student Medical Action Plan to assist First Aid staff in providing care to your child. This may include clotting disorders, high/low blood pressure, POTS, cerebral palsy, diabetes, epilepsy / seizures, mental health disorders, etc.
This plan is an opportunity for you to describe your child's conditions and symptoms, outline any medication they may be taking, and provide information about how we can care for them during a medical episode (including who to call) in as much or as little detail as you feel comfortable disclosing.
The information you provide can be invaluable in the event of an emergency, and greatly assist us and emergency services staff to ensure your child receives the appropriate care.
All plans are confidential, and will only be accessed by first aid staff.
Click the button below to download the template. Please complete the plan (either digitally or in hardcopy), and provide the First Aid Officer with a copy for their reference.
