Community Youth Advance (CYA) transforms out-of-school time to help all our youth thrive. Our out-of-school-time programs fill existing gaps in the local community and help our youth find pathways forward. We harness the power of community to help economically disadvantaged youth excel and achieve more in school and life. CYA, in partnership with Prince George’s County Public Schools (PGCPS), is proud to operate several after-school programs throughout Prince George’s County. The mission of each extended learning program is to enhance students’ mastery of reading, writing, math and STEM so they are prepared for the rigors of college and/or a career. Research indicates that students who participate in high quality extended learning programs have improved academic performance, higher self-esteem, and greater self-confidence.
The History of CYA
Born out of the merger between Mentoring to Manhood, Inc. and Community Tutoring Inc.—two organizations in Prince George’s County highly regarded for positive outcomes in mentoring and academic gains, respectively—Community Youth Advance is an educational non-profit organization that provides extended-day learning, mentoring, and STEAM-based summer experiences to students in grades K–12 of all learning levels, from underperforming to Honors and AP. Additionally, we offer training/professional development, SAT/ACT Prep, and special programs to aid our students in preparing for post-secondary college or careers.
Our Values
Lead with love! - CYA Motto
Our philosophy is not complicated. We simply believe with good, solid instruction from qualified teachers, all students can achieve. We employ research-based pedagogical methods that cater to the individual needs of each student, whether in one-on-one or small group settings. Beginning with high levels of expectation and student accountability, we meet students where they are academically and then provide them with the tools and support to help take them as far as they want to go. We understand that effective learning requires an entire community, including familial and school support. CYA's values guide the organization's goals and mission and underlie our work in the community. Our eight values are:
Integrity
Integrity is doing the right thing even when it is hard.
Trust
Trust is built when we DO what we say, HOW we said we would do it, and WHEN we said we will do it.
Excellence
Excellence starts with close attention to details.
Service
To lead is to serve, to serve is to love.
Impact
The ultimate goal is impact.
Dialogue
Communication is critical.
Leadership
"Lead with Love" in all that you do.
Community
Harness the power of community.
