Professional Development

SPSEA Conference - March 23 - 25, 2023

Last March, students from Marywood attended and represented their school for the first time at the SPSEA Conference in Hershey. After the first time, our students were determined to come back the following year bigger. Here, students attended 3 professional development workshops, networked with fellow future educators, and participated in an outreach community service event.

STEM Philly Conference - Oct. 28, 2023

SPSEA students travelled to St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia to the Philadelphia Regional Institute of STEM Educators (PRISE) Conference. This conference focused on "Exploring and Expanding Ways to Make STEM Relevant" and featured workshops ranging from elementary to high school integrations of STEM into the classroom.

Mental Health Awareness Day

- Oct. 10, 2023

SPSEA members participated in Marywood's second annual MHAD on campus. Members created a workshop that was based on stress relief. Using the model from @fivefootoneteacher on Instagram, students presented the 3-2-1 method that encourages individuals to reflect on their day, find gratitude, and acknowledge their current needs. Students had a poster board for students to use throughout the day and contribute ideas to; attendees were sent with a weekly calendar to follow to practice 3-2-1.

ESL Student Halloween Party

- Sept. 28, 2023

In late September, SPSEA and MUSE members organized a Halloween Experience for the students in the International Education Program at Marywood. The students in the IEP program were from Korea, and never experienced a traditional Halloween in America. SPSEA and MUSE collaborated to plan an informational PowerPoint about the American holiday, and got to "teach" the students about American customs. SPSEA, MUSE, and the IEP students got to reenact typical Halloween events such as "tick-or-treat" and "candy tasting". Throughout the day, SPSEA and MUSE had the opportunity to learn about some popular Korean traditions and even try some Korean treats!

KDP Viewing Nights - Sept. 26 & Oct. 10, 2023

In the fall semester, there were two KDP Viewing Nights where SPSEA members had the chance to learn about SEL and classroom management. The viewing nights consisted of prerecorded professional development videos, and quick question-answer sessions.

New Student Orientation Week - July 9 - 15, 2023

Students at Marywood and the School of Education had the opportunity to become a Small Group Leader, Team Leader, or Chair for New Student Orientation this past Summer; we had education students represent in all 3 roles. Students were mentors to incoming students. They were required to stay on campus for a week and attend trainings that focused on leadership and mentorship. You have never heard of school spirit until you walk on to Marywood's campus during O-Week! We are so grateful to have been part of welcoming our new Pacers into our community and our home.

Leadership Training Days - Sept. 2, 2023 & Jan. 20, 2024

Each semester, members of executive boards from all 100+ clubs on campus come together for leadership trainings. We discuss responsibilities and community involvement, and we are given planning periods before we leave to collaborate and think of events we can bring to the community for the upcoming year!

Conversations with PA Teachers of the Year

- Feb. 21, 2024

Dr. Marilyn Pryle and Mr. Mike Soskil came to Marywood to talk with our pre-service educators, answering any questions they had about education. We talked student engagement, behavior management, politics, burnout, and all the joys that comes with teaching. It was such a pleasure to learn from these two fabulous educators!

Dr. Chris Clayton & A.I. - Dec. 7, 2023

Dr. Chris Clayton came to Marywood to talk with pre-service educators about the increasing presence of AI. Specifically, he taught Marywood students about various resources that they can carry into the classroom. This presentation was so valuable and helps teachers ensure they are well-versed in today's technology.
