"We help people with difficulties from the neck up! This includes communicating, eating, and thinking." - The Informed SLP
In addition to supporting speech (articulation, stuttering), language (expressive, receptive, pragmatic), and other domains mentioned above, school-based SLPs can:
Provide consultation and support in developing visual supports
Provide support in determining accommodations and modifications
Provide input on communicative supports for students' regulation and behavior
Oversee the SIT (Student Improvement Team) process for students with communication concerns only
Provide recommendations for supporting language within curriculum
Provide training for faculty and families
Connect educational professionals with information needed to serve students with a wide range of disorders or disacilities
SLPs are required to utilize evidence-based practices and adhere to the ASHA Code of Ethics. Best practice in school-based speech-language pathology requires strengths-based, student-centered support that respects and embraces students' individuality and autonomy.
The Wyandotte Comprehensive Special Education Cooperative employs around 50 SLPs, forming a network of professionals whose combined expertise spans all domains of communication. Do you know your building SLP? Get to know them and see how they can support you and your students!
