Extended School Year (ESY)
When the IEP is initially developed, reviewed annually, or amended, the IEP team shall consider the need for extended school year (ESY) services for students with disabilities. Eligibility for ESY is an individualized decision based on the student’s needs. The reason for these services is to ensure the provision of FAPE, so that the students can make progress toward the goals specified on the student’s IEP and to prevent regression, which would impede such progress. ESY vs. Summer School
ESY vs. Summer School
Summer School or the Summer Learning Program is designed to help students maintain the skills they acquired during the regular school year, while helping students obtain new skills for the upcoming school year. In KCKPS, all Prek-12 students are offered this opportunity (even students with IEPs).
Extended School Year (ESY) is to prevent regression, which is the loss of skills, over the summer break. ESY focuses on skills the student have already mastered in attempts to maintain those skills for as long as possible. ESY is not offered to every student, but is for students with IEPs where the team has deemed it necessary.
