About our Positive Behavior Intervention and Support model

At Dayton Elementary we utilize a Positive Behavioral Intervention and Support Model (or PBIS). You have probably heard us talk about it! On this page you will find information about how we use it, its benefits, how you can incorporate it at home and explaining what it is.

Positive Behavioral Intervention and Supports (PBIS).

PBIS is a way of managing behaviors at school by creating a culture of positive expectations. We promote positive expectations through the use of: rewards, motivations, common language and universal communications. This comes from the field of positive psychology that argues that real learning and change occurs when a person feels success in their achievements and wants to feel more. PBIS is a data driven approach that uses data to see where we need to improve and explores positive motivations to create this change. For example you may have noticed your child receiving bobcat bucks or getting a positive office referral? These are rewards a student can get for being spotted making a right choice. Over time these right choices become our normal.

Growth Mindset

Dayton Elementary utilizes an understanding of a growth mindset at its core which complements a PBIS framework. A growth mindset accepts that there are self-imposed limits to a persons learning; it is more an issue of belief in ones ability to learn than actual learning ability. By accepting that failing is part of learning which is essential part of the learning process and by changing what we say to ourselves from "I cant do it" to "I cant do it yet" we move from a fixed to a growth mindset.

Social-Emotional Learning

This is embedded into our school curriculum here at Dayton Elementary School. Each class gets a 30 minute lesson a week taught in class with the teacher. Social-emotional learning are skills that teach a child how to thrive emotionally and socially so that potential social emotional problems do not become a distraction to their academic learning. Examples are how to deal with conflict with others, how to work collaboratively and manage difficult feelings positively. We use a program at our school called Second Step to teach social-emotional learning. Second Step has supplemental activities and lessons for the home that you can use with your child that complement what we teach at school. These lessons are in an electronic format and can be accessed with the codes below.

Simply click on the picture to the right to be taken to the Second Step website. Create an account; you will be prompted to enter the code for your child's grade.

Multi-Tiered System of Support

PBIS utilizes three tiers of interventions.

Tier One - These are interventions for every student across our school. At Dayton Elementary these are our social-emotional curriculum from Second Step; our bobcat bucks reward system; our positive office referrals and our bobcat store.

Tier Two - Using school data we identify students who may need additional support in their academic and social-emotional realm beyond what we deliver in Tier One. This support is done through a group setting; this is usually about 10% of our students. At Dayton Elementary this is our GATE program; after-school tutoring; our Kindness Club or even a small group such as teaching social or study skills. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic and associated restrictions some of our tier two interventions and supports have been limited this year.

Tier Three - Again, using school data we identify students who may need additional support in their academic and social-emotional realm beyond what we deliver in both Tier One and Two. This support is done individually; this is usually about 1-5% of our students. At Dayton Elementary this may be having the student checking in and out with a trusted adult; meeting with the counselor to discuss how to overcome a problem or our Special Education program.

Our Multi-Tiered System of Implementation

Dayton Elementary utilizes a small team to lead our PBIS schoolwide implementation. This team consists of our administration, teachers from both our younger and older grades, a parent, a community representatives and educational specialist support staff. We are currently this year beginning our official implementation of PBIS Tier Two of our Multi-tiered System of Supports. Though we still provide tier three supports as always.

....and discipline

PBIS does not mean no discipline. What it does mean is that we are using PBIS to reduce our need to use discipline and when we do use it it is educational and restorative in nature. We want students to learn from poor choices they make so that they can make better choices in future. And if they hurt another student emotionally or physically we encourage the student to make amends through restorative practices and a consequence that makes sense to the offence.
