The Schools Deans are formally appointed by and report to the CAO. The appointment is normally for five years and is
renewable once for an additional five years. The responsibilities include the following:
Vision & Leadership
• Works with faculty and staff to develop and evolve the vision of the School that aligns with the University's
strategic plan
• Articulates and communicates a clear vision for the College to internal and external stakeholders
• Develops strategies for pursuing the College's vision and goals
• Fosters a climate of continuous improvement and encouragement of new initiatives
• Collaborates with faculty for ongoing program improvement
• Helps faculty align personal goals with University and College goals and vision
• Manages change process within the College
• Responsible for building and fostering a faculty culture that honors the values outlined in the mission of the
University
Personnel Management/Supervision
• Works with faculty and staff to align academic priorities with strategic plan
• Appoints department chairs and program directors
• Supervises faculty, staff, and center directors and hold them accountable for meeting expectations
• Provides annual feedback to faculty on the reflective narrative and review growth each year
• Responsible for staffing courses
• Promotes inclusive and effective communication
• In concert with search committees, makes recommendations to Provost on hiring
• Conducts meetings with program directors and department chairs for college-wide issues
• Assigns teaching load
• Addresses faculty, student, department conflict
• Responsible for faculty evaluation and reappointment recommendations
• Responsible for faculty mid-tenure reviews
• Responsible for making tenure and promotion recommendations based on criteria set forth in faculty handbook
• Recommend periodic pay increases
• Develops annual hiring plan
Financial Management
• Manages budget and aligns budget with University priorities and strategic plan
• Works directly with the CAO to develop and coordinate the School's budget request
• Adheres to policies and procedures established by Business Office
• Maintains resource expenditures while simultaneously limiting the School's risk and liability
Curriculum Development and Program Management
• Supports departments to utilize data to engage in continuous improvements, particularly as they relate to student
learning
• Assists with and ensures that faculty and staff are assessing the effectiveness of courses, programs, and services
• Monitors effectiveness of academic programs and takes action accordingly
• Meets annually with chairs and program directors to review program review data
• Reviews and recommends revisions to program requirements, descriptions, and prerequisites
• Advises faculty of policy changes as appropriate
• Oversees course offerings process
• Assists Associate Provost with course offerings for J-Term and Summer School
• Communicates and implements academic policies and procedures
• Develops partnerships with programs outside of School
• Coordinates with other college deans regarding scheduling of courses included in programs outside the School
• Supports curriculum offered through General Education and Westover Programs
• Responsible for overseeing program self-studies
• Responsible for annual submission of assessment reports for programs in School
General Administrative Duties and Responsibilities
• Works with endowed chairs and faculty to bring to campus speakers and events that will raise the profile of the
College
• Assists faculty and staff with developing and updating program planning
• Reviews faculty request for professional development and reimbursement
• Participates in Provost's Council meetings
• Addresses faculty and student concerns
• Finds opportunities for synergy between Schools and fosters interdisciplinary collaboration
• Collaborates with Student Support Services
• Liaison with advancement, enrollment, business office, registrar, advising, and student development for student
recruitment, retention, and other activities
• Works with enrollment, graduate studies, and MARCOM regarding marketing
• Monitors facility and technology needs of School
• Prioritizes academic equipment needs of School
Professional and External Affairs Management
• Represents the college at statewide, regional, national, international meetings, etc. as appropriate
• Responsible for licensure, accreditation, etc.*
• Creates partnerships, as appropriate, with external organizations
• Assists in grant writing projects and advancement activities
• Responsible for advisory boards
• Responsible for sharing information affecting academic programs from state and national organizations
