Several students attending our school are severely allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Our goal is for all students to be able to learn in a safe environment. Sumac will provide a nut-safe environment, but we need your assistance to accomplish this goal.
Children who are allergic to nuts do not need to ingest them to have a significant reaction, but they may react from merely touching surfaces or items that have been in contact with nuts. Prevention is the best approach for reducing the risk of a severe allergic reaction. Therefore, we ask you not to send nut products to school with your child. We realize that eliminating all nut products is challenging, but if your child were at risk, you'd want everyone to support this effort.
Please talk to your child about nut allergies and encourage them not to share food. As outlined by our school board and Administrative Policy 5141.27, our teachers will not use nut products for classroom activities, and classroom parties will not involve nut treats. We appreciate your support and understanding in providing a safe environment for all students.
