Yerba Buena and Round Meadow Elementary
Welcome!
In performing arts, our goal is to grow our social and emotional well-being through performing activities and social connections. We play games, study technique, learn about theory, and most importantly... HAVE FUN! Through theatre, dance, and music we will explore introductory concepts to ensure students will learn basic performing arts technique, protocol, and gain the ability to work collaboratively with others. Students will develop an understanding of stage production through work with costumes, props, and basic stage scenery. They will also explore stage movement, establish a balance of self-control and expression, music theory and appreciation, and have opportunities to perform in front of audience at school and within the community.
Teaching Philosophy
I truly believe that knowledge is nothing with the absence of creativity. You can pack numerous facts and theories into your head but if you cannot articulately express it, that information is pointless, forever stuck in your head. That is why I wanted to be a teacher. I want to be the somebody that sparks creativity and a lifelong love of learning. For me, that was through performing arts. Having a performing arts education not only aids in self- expression but also improves communication and teamwork skills. I wish to create an environment in which students learn the importance of technique and history while honing their creativity, self expression, problem solving, and collaborative mind.
Through the arts, Students are forced to look at the world in a different way and gain valuable creative thinking and problem solving skills. The Arts create a broader human perspective to all other subjects learned. They help develop confidence, which is essential to speaking clearly, articulately and thoughtfully. It also creates an outlet for a student’s emotions, hopes, and dreams that they might not otherwise have the means to express. The Arts are a reflection of society. It helps us see our problems and helps us fix them. They not only tell us stories of our past, but also show us a way to shape our future.
In addition to its essential educational value, performing arts can reinforce the rest of the school curriculum. Since communication and empathy are central to Drama, a student who has explored the theatre will be better able to understand ideas in History, Literature, Science, and Current Events. They will be able to put themselves into the shoes of figures in history and literature, to understand how people interact. I always strive to link my theatre lessons to topics and themes my students are studying in other subjects, or to important social questions. In this way performing arts accomplishes several goals at once- enriching students' school experience through art as well as reinforcing traditional academics.
Being a theatre educator has been an extremely rewarding experience. Not every student is meant to be a scientist, lawyer, or engineer. That being said, not every student will continue to be active in theatre either. I believe the skills you learn from performing are invaluable, no matter what profession you choose to pursue. Performing Arts skills are for life.
