Guided Reading
"It makes me smile to see children leaning over a table, dig into a book, solve problems, and construct meaning. Why? Because these precious children are experiencing a wonderful feeling of accomplishment. They know they are becoming better readers, and they are excited about it." - Jan Richardson
Guided reading is an instructional approach that involves a teacher working with a small group of readers. Teachers group their children after giving the BAS test and finding each child's instructional reading level. During the lesson, the teacher provides a text that students can read with support, coaching the learners as they use problem-solving strategies to read the text. The ultimate goal is independent reading at the instructional level in which they entered this guided reading group.

FAQ:
Can I use novels during guided reading group/instruction?
Shorter chapter books that can be used for 6-8 days is best practice and must be on the students' highest instructional level. Example: "Old Yeller" is a guided reading level V. This book should not be used in guided reading groups. This book would be ideal for "Book Clubs" or independent reading times.
Novels used over multiple weeks reduces text exposure to other types of genres, titles, and skills.
