School and Classroom Expectations

Whole Body Listening-PBIS for first graders

We are learning how to listen and learn with our whole bodies. OWLS are curious, responsible, and know how to listen and follow directions. We will be working on what those behaviors look like and sound like this year. We will ask your kiddos to reflect and give feedback on how they were learning. We will celebrate successful learning positions and we will provide suggestions/feedback on how to best achieve whole body listening as needed. The first quarter is heavily focused on what an OWL looks like and sounds like when they are ready to learn and working hard!

Habits of Mind

Classroom and learning expectations for first graders at JMC (1st quarter):

Comprehension and collaboration: First graders will follow agreed upon rules for discussions (listening to others with care, speaking one at a time about the texts/topics under discussion). CCSS Literacy SL 1A

Build on one another's talks in conversation by responding to the comments of others through multiple exchanges. CCSS Literacy SL 1B

This standard is practiced during whole class discussion/instruction. Students are working on raising their hands, waiting for a pause in discussion or for a person to complete their thought before jumping in. We are working on "thinking out loud", prompting "what can you add to ____'s thinking".

Phonics and word recognition: First graders will be able to read grade level text, using sight words and decoding to read for fluency and comprehension.

-know and use letter sound relationship for reading and writing

-read one syllable words (both by sight and decoding or sounding out)

-read inflectional endings

-recognize and read grade appropriate irregularly spelled words

-write simple sentences independently

-generate 3 sentences independently by December (5 by the end of the year)

Scientist of week

Scientist of the Week

Kiddos will perform a science experiment in class. Please have your child practice the experiment at home and be sure it is an experiment that they can perform to the class, on their own. You can practice demonstrating and reading the description of the experiment at home!

Your child will need to bring all materials needed for the experiment to school on their designated day. They will fill out the "lab report" at home and bring it back to school along with our Scientist of the Week Class Journal. You even get to wear a lab coat and googles too!
