Lufkin ISD has supported Dual Language for more than 30 years, serving as an important part of our district and community and demonstrating our dedication to bilingual education.

Students develop strong skills in both English and Spanish, becoming proficient speakers, readers, and writers in both.
Students meet or exceed state academic standards in all content areas, demonstrating strong performance in both languages.
Students gain an understanding and appreciation of diverse cultures, perspectives, and communities. They learn to communicate and collaborate across cultural differences.
Students progress toward advanced levels of language proficiency, preparing them for college, careers, and real-world communication in two languages.

A LOTE credit in Texas refers to a credit earned in a Language Other Than English, which is a high school graduation requirement. Students typically need two credits in the same language.
In accordance with Texas Education Code (TEC) §28.0051 and 19 TAC §74.12(b)(5)(F), a student may satisfy one credit of the two LOTE credits required for graduation by successfully completing a dual language immersion (DLI) program at elementary school.
In order to be eligible for the high school credit at the end of fourth or fifth grade, a Dual Language student must meet the following state criteria:
Have participated in a dual language immersion program for at least five consecutive years;
Achieve high levels of academic competence, as demonstrated by performance of Meets or Masters on STAAR Reading and Math.
Multiple years of STAAR data can be reviewed
Achieve proficiency in English and Spanish, as demonstrated by scores of proficient or higher in the reading and speaking domains on language proficiency tests.
