Lufkin ISD is proud to serve the multilingual students and families in our community. Our Bilingual and ESL programs support more than 1,400 Emergent Bilingual students, along with others who benefit from language services. These programs help students develop language skills while growing as bilingual, biliterate, and culturally aware learners who enrich our classrooms with their diverse backgrounds and experiences.
Our goal is to provide strong instruction, meaningful support, and collaborative partnerships with families so every student can succeed academically and continue growing as a lifelong learner.
An Emergent Bilingual (EB) student is a child who is learning English while also speaking another language at home. These students are developing English skills and continuing to grow in their first language.
Watch the video below to learn how schools identify EB students and provide the support they need to succeed. This process ensures every child receives the right help to thrive academically while valuing their home language and culture.
Emergent bilingual students are a rapidly growing and vital part of Texas public schools. These students bring rich linguistic and cultural assets to our classrooms.
TXEL.org provides information and resources to support educational leaders, teachers, parents, and families in the academic success of emergent bilingual students.
LISD provides four program models to support Emergent Bilingual students. Each model is designed to build language skills, strengthen academics, and help students succeed.

Bilingualism matters because it strengthens students’ cognitive skills, supports academic growth, and helps them connect with multiple cultures and communities. At Lufkin ISD, we view bilingualism as an asset that opens doors for students now and in the future.
