The Lucky Iron Fish is made from food grade electrolytic iron powder that meets the Food Chemical Codex (FCC) standards. This type of iron is: (1) approved for use in food supplements worldwide which helps with regulatory approvals and processes; (2) is bioavailable; and (3) comes in a very pure form. The Lucky Iron Fish is rigorously tested to ensure quality, purity, and consistency of iron release. The production facility in India is ISO 9001, 14001, ISO 22000 (HACCP), and OHSAS 18001 certified.
The Lucky Iron Fish is safe for the whole family, including babies over 6 months who have started complementary feeding (per WHO guidelines). Iron should not be given to babies under 6 months, and who have not started complementary feeding, unless recommended by their doctor. We have not tested the use of the Lucky Iron Fish on infants under 12 months of age. The LIF was clinically tested and has shown improvement in iron levels for babies over teh age of 12 months. According to the Canadian Paediatric Society guidelines, most infants do not require additional iron in the first year of their life. However, if your baby's physician decides that the baby needs more iron then we suggest that you follow their advice about the best way to treat your infant.
The Lucky Iron Fish has been tested in clinical trials among different groups of people around the world. These clinical trials show that regular use of the Lucky Iron Fish (at least three times a week) improves the iron status of infants, school-aged children, and women. Further information on the science behind the action of the Lucky Iron Fish can be found here.
The Lucky Iron Fish has been examined by various regulators including Health Canada and Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). A summary of the research can be found in this document.
The release of iron from the Leaf was detected in research using inductively-coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES), as seen in the table. The time that the water as boiled is titrated against the acidity of the boiling solution (addition of citrus juice to the water). 7 Leaf were tested in each cell and samples of boiled water were tested in triplicate to note an average of the iron released. Data points are in mg/L.
