Iron is the critical nutrient that feeds your body and your brain. It helps your blood move the oxygen from lungs to your muscles, organs, and the rest of the body. Lack of adequate iron for prolonged periods can develop into iron deficiency anemia (IDA), a condition that leads to a reduction in the number of red blood cells. Though everyone is susceptible to developing iron deficiency or anemia at different times in their lives, women and children are among the groups of people who are at a higher risk.
Iron deficiency impacts earning potential. In Low Middle Income Countries, it is estimated that iron deficiency contributes to a 20% loss of earning income.
Iron deficiency is preventable. However, many people affected by it cannot afford to buy iron-rich foods like red meat (or do not eat meat) or iron supplements which often have some unpleasant side effects in addition to being expensive.
