Material life

Affected by material enjoyment and happiness that can be bought with money, e.g. Food, living space, travelling

Spiritual life (non-material life)

Affected by inner satisfaction and happiness that cannot be bought with money directly, e.g. Health, social relationship, self-actualization

The five perspectives

Quality of life can also be discussed in the five perspectives

Political: Political freedom, human rights, ...
Economic: Employment, income, purchasing power, ...
Social: People's health, living environment, ...
Cultural: Cultural activities, celebration of festivals, ...
Environmental: Pollution, greening, nature, ...

Requirement for high marks: Width and Depth

a. 'Width'

Width means the number of perspectives.

For example, apart from having less money to spend on daily goods (Economics perspective), you are also expected to discuss

the limited space and lack of privacy (Social perspective)
the dissatisfaction with the government (Political perspective)

'Width' also means that different stakeholders on the same issue should also be elaborated.

For example, high property prices affect low-income earners as they can only afford sub-divided flats, but you should also talk about

low-income earners are forced to live in public housing flats
middle-income earners have less time spent on their children for both parents to work.

b. 'Depth'

Depth means how detailed the explanation is towards Quality of life. Here is an example from one of our students:

High property price
-> Rent has to be high to guarantee a return
-> People paying rents who cannot afford a flat are particularly dissatisfied, including many young people and people at the grassroot level
-> They no longer have faith or show their support towards the government
-> Weakening governance means that the government cannot govern the place properly
-> People's quality of life is lowered.
