The Sierra Madre mountain range faces significant challenges due to mostly human activities, despite its critical role in acting as a natural barrier against floods and typhoons in our country. As of now, the mountain range faces many challenges, such as deforestation and illegal logging, which lead to biodiversity loss and increased flooding and landslides, Mining operations that could cause environmental damage to the mountain range, and the poor implementation of laws due to corruption inside the Philippine government.
Suppose illegal activities like logging and mining, and insufficient protection for the Sierra Madre, persist. In that case, we will likely see not only progressively detrimental environmental effects, such as the increasing severity of mild climatic phenomena like typhoons, floods, landslides, and extended droughts, as well as the extinction of many endemic species, resulting in a drastic loss of biodiversity. Conversely, positive actions can obviously create a better possibility here! For one, creating stricter environmental legislation, raising public awareness, and stimulating eco-tourism, which local communities create sustainable livelihoods. As we move forward with advances in sustainable forestry and technology related to monitoring and protection, we might still save the Sierra Madre for the future.
Efforts are now made to protect the Sierra Madre, various environmental groups urged the government to take measures regarding the looming threats that are growing to the mountain ranges, as one senatorial aspirant quoted that “We cannot afford to ignore the threats that illegal activities pose to our natural defenses. The Sierra Madre must be safeguarded against all forms of exploitation.”
