The Philippine government, with the help of various associations, helps provide structure by establishing and enforcing laws to maintain order, stability, and safety within a society, including its environmental aspect. This remains a crucial factor for the survival and protection of citizens' welfare as well as the overall growth of the nation. They serve as essential instruments in fostering sustainable development. Ultimately, they are in charge of cooperating in the decision-making processes that aim for the holistic betterment of the country and its people, ensuring the prevalence of a united framework.
Affiliated Organizations
In order to attain our goal, it is undeniable that the support from government and non-government associations plays a vital role in propagating conservation efforts across vulnerable landscapes in the country, particularly the Sierra Madre Mountain Range. The following are some of the major organizations that are inclined to safeguarding the environmental integrity of the Sierra Madre.
The Department of Environment and Natural Resources, also known as DENR, is the executive department of the Philippine government that is responsible for presiding and supervising the country's natural resources, along with its exploration, development, utilization, and conservation.
The Climate Change Commission is the head of the government's policy-making body that is tasked to coordinate, monitor, and evaluate environmental programs while ensuring the mainstream development of actions toward climate change on a national, local, and sectoral scale through creating plans in the establishment of a climate-resilient and climate-smart Philippines.
Save Sierra Madre Network Alliance, Inc. is a non-government organization that is focused on communicating the importance of conserving and protecting the Sierra Madre Mountain range to provide sustainable ecological services, through advocacies linked to a network of stakeholders and direct contact to IP communities, who remain active.
What is Our Progress?
One of the most recent projects is by GMO GlobalSign, Inc., where seven volunteers planted 200 native agroforestry trees as part of the CSR reforestation effort in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, in Siniloan, Laguna, last November 10, 2024. This serves as a large contributor to the restoration of Sierra Madre’s ecological landscape, playing a critical role in strengthening the country’s climate resilience. At the same time, the team provided rice to 20 forest-dependent families, who have long helped in protecting the over 9,000-hectare area. The activity was conducted in line with the initiatives of Ridge to REEForestation program of FEED Inc., which focuses on supporting sustainable livelihoods through restoring native forests.
Local community members and site managers collectively assisted in the preparation of the area and continued to patrol and maintain the mountain range. The trees planted consisted of 50 bani, 70 malaruhat, 50 kupang, and 30 akdang, which are expected to isolate approximately 200 tonnes of carbon dioxide over their lifetime. Aside from the betterment of the existing environment, this initiative further underscores the importance of collaboration and shared stewardship in the process of safeguarding the Sierra Madre.
