OBJECTIVE

The objective of this mobility was to introduce the theme of the two-year project and have the students start thinking about the place of the Media in their lives and in their education.

PREPARATION

A first assignment was given beforehand to help them understand what people really think when we talk about Media. The students surveyed people around them asking: what words come to your mind when you hear the word media.

ACTIVITIES

On arrival to Lycée Pilot Innovant International and an introduction by the head master and the French team the Lycée students were responsible for ice-breaking and team building activities before presenting the the outcome of the introductory task that was a wordcloud from each country. The groups analysed and presented their findings It was very interesting to become aware the similarities and differences between the countries, and the students got really involved and stressed how differently people react to the word Media. The discussion between them were enthralling and they debated quite a lot on various serious topics such as fake news and manipulation..

After this this week’s tasks were introduced and the students immediately started working on their projects in international groups. In their preparations for the study visit to Poitiers 7 they did research on the publication, the journalist they were about to meet and also prepared interview questions to ask on-site. They got an introduction to the structure of a radio report feature by the school librarian and explicit instructions on how to use the digital recording equipment by the teacher responsible for the school radio station DeltaFM and some of the media students of the Lycée. The international study groups then got acquainted with the equipment, making “micro trottoire” among the students of the school about the impact of the school radio station.

On Wednesday morning, the students were given a tour of the magazine office and a presentation of the media situation in France and then given the opportunity to interview the journalist Romain Mudrak and record some ambience sounds for their radio report. While a team was doing the interview the others created survey questions. The goal was to find questions that can help the media usage of teenagers, their information sources, their attitude towards media.

Back at the lycée the focused work continued until lunch when the students were given some free time for activities with there hosts and sightseeing in the historical town of Poitiers while the project team had time to discuss the coming exchange visits.

On Thursday, the final working day, the students worked hard to conclude the radio project, that apart from the interview with Mudrak, also included a critical discussion of the news coverage of a commonly known European historical event, in this case the anniversary of the fall of the Berlin wall, and the impact of DeltaFM. All the students were involved in this work and the project team were very impressed with the work ethic and ambition of the participating students. The mobility was concluded with a party, celebrating the successful work, before the students went back to their host families to pack and prepare for departure.
