Week 33: Willie Seaweed

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Willie Seaweed. He was a master wood carver and was known for his totem poles. He helped remember and pass down traditions of the Kwakuitl people. We created our own totem poles with different animals and creatures.

Week 31: Claude Monet

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Claude Monet. We found out that he painted in an impressionistic style which has bright colors and small brushstrokes. He enjoyed painting water lilies and planted his own lily pond so he could paint them all the time. We created our own lily pond artwork like his.

Week 29: Georgia O'Keeffe

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Georgia O'Keeffe. We found out that she loved nature and wanted to find ways to show the world how wonderful it was. We created large flower drawings similar to the large scale flower paintings that made O'Keeffe a famous artist.

Week 28: Rene Magritte

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Rene Magritte. We found out that he created artwork that is called Surrealism and looks like strange dreams. We created a surreal artwork of a bird.

Week 27: Remington & Russell

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Charles Russell and Fredric Remington. We found out that they were both inspired by the Wild West. We created desert landscapes filled with interesting patterns.

Week 26: Wassily Kandinsky

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Wassily Kandinsky. We found out that he was inspired by sounds and music. He was one of the first artists to create Abstract art. We created iconic Russian buildings called Onion Domes that are colorful and have interesting shapes just like Kandinsky's artwork.

Week 25: Vincent Van Gogh

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Vincent Van Gogh. We found out that he painted in an impressionistic style which has bright colors and small brushstrokes. He enjoyed painting colorful things and very much enjoyed sunflowers. Week 24: Roy Lichtenstein

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Roy Lichtenstein. We found out that he created large artworks that looked like ads from the newspapers or comic books called Pop Art. He created artwork that used lines and dots and bright colors to make it look as though is was printed. We created our own stamps with foam and made it into food similar to what some of Roy's artworks looked like.

Week 23: Edward Hopper

This week we continue learning about Pageant artists from the past. This time we learned about Edward Hopper. We discovered that he enjoyed making artwork of buildings and lighthouses. He created artwork that captured moments of everyday life and the way light made them beautiful. We created our own lighthouse in a torn paper collage.

Week 22: Edgar Degas

Week 21: Henri Rousseau

This week we began learning about Pageant artists from the past. We started with Henri Rousseau. We discovered that he enjoyed making paintings of jungles but never went to a jungle himself. He used his imagination and photos to create cool jungle scenes. We used our imagination to draw a jungle animal similar to what he did in the past.

Week 20: Creature in a Bottle

This week we quickly looked at an artist duo called kudu-lah that makes cool creatures in bottles. We used them as inspiration and created our own imaginary creatures in bottles.

Week 19: Texture and Shape Castle

This week we talked about texture and shape. We used shapes and our imagination to create unique castles. We also were given the option to use different kinds of textures found around us to create crayon rubbing textures on our castle.

Week 18: Snacking Shark

This week we created a silly surprise drawing. We learned how to draw a shark and created a pop-out mouth with all the strange things it had been snacking on.

Week 17: 1-Point Perspective Farm

This week we talked about landscapes and perspective again. We reviewed the idea that things get smaller as that get further away. We each created our own 1-Point perspective farm where the crops got smaller as they went back in space.

Week 16: Pop-Up Landscape

This week we talked about landscapes and perspective. We discussed how in perspective things that get further away from us look smaller. We created our own 3-D landscapes where the buildings became smaller as they got further away.

Week 15: Flashlight Drawing

This week we looked at the book Flashlight by Lizi Boyd. We talked about what an illustration is and created our own nighttime illustrations. We looked at different kinds of nocturnal animals to draw in our artwork.

Week 14: Form Cakes

This week we talked about Form again which is one of the Elements of Art. We created our own unique 3-D cakes and used shadows to make them pop. Then they were decorated with different kinds of lines and patterns.

Week 13: Snowflake Printing

This week we learned about Printmaking. We talked about symmetry and created a symmetrical snowflake on a blank paper. Then we learned how to create a foil print by coloring on a piece of foil and transferring it to our snowflake paper.

Week 12: Form Snowmen

This week we learned about Form which is one of the Elements of Art. We created a snowman and added shading to make it look like a 3-D Form. We also used a colorful paper so we could use white to create our highlights and darker colors to create the shadows.

Week 10: Texture Leaf Rubbing

Week 9: Complementary Color Op Art

Week 8: Value Spider Web

This week we learned about Value which is one of the Elements of Art. We discussed how to create different values by pressing harder or lighter with our supplies or by adding more water if we were painting. Week 6: Warm & Cool Color Fish

Week 5: Color Mixing

This week we learned about Color which is one of the Elements of Art. We talked about Primary colors and how to mix them into Secondary colors. We create what I call "surprise drawings" of color mixing. Students colored with Primary colors on the outside and the colors mixed the the middle to create the Secondary colors.
