What is Rowing?

Rowing is a full-body, low-impact sport. We practice on the Willamette River when the conditions allow, and during winter months we train in the warehouse on the ergs (rowing machines).

Rowing is a team sport, and we practice in boats of up to 9 people and as few as 1

Many people think rowing requires buff arms but nope! Rowers have big quads, as the sport uses about 80% leg power. Just as the seat on a rowing machine slides back and forth, so do the seats in our boats! Next comes core strength, keeping the boat stable as we sit up tall and lean back at the end of each stroke. The only sport that uses more muscle groups than rowing is swimming!

What are practices like?

Rowers wake up early! Practices will be held at 6:05 am on Tuesdays and Thursdays, and 7:00 am on Sundays. You will have an opportunity to learn the basics of rowing and determine if you would like to commit for the year. We row on the Willamette River, our rows spanning anywhere from the boathouse to Oregon City or the Sellwood Bridge in Portland. When the weather or river conditions prove too risky for outdoor practice, we do team erg (rowing machine) workouts in the LOCR warehouse space.Â
