The College of Computer Studies and Engineering (CCSE) of Lorma Colleges handles the Information Technology Education (ITE) Programs which are the following:  BS Computer Science, BS Information Technology, BS Computer Engineering and Masters in Information Systems.  These are with Certificates of Authority from the Commission on Higher Education (CHED). 

CCSE was awarded the first and has retained its status as  “Center of Development in IT Education (COD-ITE) in Region I”.  It was awarded SY 2000.  The status was retained for SY 2007-2010. CHED extended this status up todate. 

Lorma Colleges is has been under the accreditation program of the prestigious Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (PAASCU) for CCSE’s ITE Programs.

 

INSTRUCTION

 

Last January 2017, a 12 member team from PAASCU headed by Prof. Pijano visited Lorma Colleges for the BSIT, BSCS and BSCOE programs of the College of Computer Studies and Engineering. The PAASCU team during the post conference provided initial inputs as a result of consultation visit for the BSCoE program.  Moreover, discussions and observations made during the course of the visit were assessed; hence this report provides an insight on the result of the visit for all CCSE programs.

The 9 weeks/9 weeks per semester format was addressed by the institution where the Academic Council through a resolution agreed to revert back to regular semester format after deliberation and presentation of research studies concerning the effect of 9 weeks format to be implemented effective 1st Semester of the preceding SY.

 

The general education subjects Philippine History and Philosophy was included in the curriculum of the IT and CS program and was revised last 2018 – 2019 as Readings in Philippine History and Philosophy was incorporated in the subject Ethics.

 

Thesis advisers in the CS and Capstone advisers in the IT program are assigned based on their area of specialization. Inclusion of adviser’s fee to the Defense Fee of thesis and capstonr project was incorporated and was effectively implemented SY 2021 – 2022. Thesis manuscript format was updated with the inclusion of presentation of data flow, algorithm , modules, system architecture and system features which shows the UI design.

 

To addess and improve the teaching methodology of teachers the institution has an existing Training and Retraining program based on Training needs submitted by each department. An in house training for Teaching Methodology is already scheduled and in addition, the teaching pedagogies such as Pair Programming in introductory programming courses and Project Based Learning on most Professional subjects was implemented. These were the suggestions of CHED TPITE during the COE/CODE inspection. Examinations were reformulated to problem solving and analysis questions to test the skills of CS and IT students and an inclusion of Table of specification was implemented to reflect the learning outcomes and topics included in the exams. Faculty members implement various teaching strategies and methodologies by incorporating online pedagogies and tools such as utilization of Google Classroom, Tesmos, Quizziz, Kahoot, Mentimeter, Padlet and Trello. To foster student engagement students present pitch and project related presentations and engage them in different ICT competitions such as Startup competitions.

 

In terms of Library collection, the institution has a collection of printed downloadable free electronic books from the different DERs as additional resources and subscription to Deepdyve journal is available in the library website.

 

LORMA Colleges continues to invest in development to improve quality of education by developing new building in the extension campus Lorma San Juan called the Center for Learning and Innovation which houses three colleges: Colleges of Computer Studies and Engineering, College of Business and College of Education and Sciences. Modernized and improved rooms were built with proper illumination and ventilation suitable to learning environment. Each room includes four ceiling fans, well illuminated lighting and fluorescent lights, two air condition per room, 40 arm chairs for lecture rooms, tables and chairs that can accommodate 25 students per laboratory room, 1 LCD projectors and or wide TV screens, and 1 rotatable white board per room. A ration of 1:1 computer unit per student.

 

A new curriculum for BS Computer Science and BS Information Technology for the School Year 2021 – 2022 was developed.  This is to update the School Year 2018 – 2019 curricula.  New Elective subjects are included for students to choose from. The objectives and professional subjects of IT and CS are anchored and aligned to the new CMO of CHED which distinguishes an IT and CS program.

 

Student punctuality and attendance are monitored utilizing the institutions school management system ACCESS where faculty can check the students’ attendance and it will be directed to the students’ record.
