Introduction to Mentoring
You have been assigned a mentee in the Mentor Program. This program is designed for those mentees who meet the following criteria:
1. they have earned preliminary, initial, or temporary certification and
2. they have never taught in a Massachusetts public school system before and /or have never been mentored before.
Mentors should plan to :
attend new teacher orientation in August; be available during the first week of school
meet with their mentees 40 – 50 hours a year; usually about 1 hour a week
report monthly on these meetings to the Mentor Program Coordinator via the monthly mentor log online
observe their mentees (8 hours/year) and arrange for mentees to observe them and/or others (8 hrs/year)
examine their mentees’ students’ work to help mentees plan for their students’ achievement
help mentee develop and fulfill professional goals
attend (at times with their mentees) all mentor meetings
fulfill all other roles and responsibilities in the Mentor Program Standards
take a mentor refresher course if initial training was completed more than 5 years ago
