In the Classroom

Mrs. Prieto's & Mrs. Kiy's Bilingual classes

All the first grade students at the GLC school went on a walking trip to the Elberon Public Library in November. While there they learned about the library, read books, and the head librarian Linda Wurzel read books to the students. On the way to and from the library the children focused on their surroundings by learning how to cross the street and read street signs. The children and teachers can't wait to go back in the spring. Andrea Montoya-Pena and Carlos Montera-Diaz from Mrs. Stagich's 3rd grade bilingual class read to the students in Mrs. Prieto's 1st grade bilingual class. The students really enjoyed listening to a story read by the older students and Andrea and Carlos got to show off their reading skills.

Ms. Stubbington completed a Unit about Foods in her ESL New Entrant class and shared many foods with her students throughout the unit such as fruit smoothies made in class in conjunction with action verbs learned in English, trying various snacks that were new to ESL students while using their learned vocabulary to describe the foods such as size, shape, color, and other adjectives in English. The students also learned about other countries and cultures and where foods come from. At the end of the unit, each student brought food from their culture to share in class for Ms. Stubbington's Annual Cultural Food Festival with foods from around the world including 9 countries. All the students completed a packet to describe the foods they ate and chose a favorite food to write about in English. It was a great day and all the students had fun and learned about food, cultures, and most importantly, used their English vocabulary!

In Mrs. Martin's Spanish III classes the students created altars to honor deceased famous people for Day of the Dead. The students brought in artifacts and then wrote about the lives of the people. The students brought in ofrendas to offer to the deceased.
