In the Classroom

Classrooms partnered with another class for the 1st Big Book Little Book activity. The students from each class shared a story, craft and snack with another grade level classroom. This allowed for the younger students to work with older students and the older students to be role models to the younger students. The teachers expressed how nice it was to be able to collaborate with a teacher from another grade level to put together the activity for their students. The teachers and students are looking forward to doing another classroom activity in the future.

Our 6th grade ESL students got to use the information they learned in science to think critically, and tried to respond to a real world situation. The topic for this marking period was Natural Disasters, and the “Situation Room” focused on earthquakes and tsunamis. They were introduced to the topic, and then spent about two days watching a documentary on the Cascadia fault line on the west coast. They were asked to play the role of a mayor, reporter, seismologist, or fireman/policeman when disaster strikes. The scenario started out minor, then escalated, with a town meeting at each level. They had to use their knowledge on when they should make evacuation mandatory to save the most amount of lives. The group was successful in saving 90% of the town of Eureka, California.
