For this project, you are going to create a drumbeat (can be one you used before) and the record a bass lines that follows our bass line criteria and follows a basic chord progression.
Download the Logic Pro Template file for this project.
In all music, the harmony is driven by a series of notes called chord progressions.
Let's start with defining some terms:
A pitch is a defined as the quality of a sound governed by the rate of vibrations producing it. All pitches can be defined by frequency, though we will most often refer to them by a name.
Chords are, at the basic level, any combination of pitches played together. A chord must have at least 3 pitches playing simultaneously.
As with music, there are no "wrong" chords, but there are best practices. For this class, we'll be sticking with what are known as diatonic chords, which are the basic chords that occur naturally in the major scale.
For this project, the chord progression is given to you. We will use the following chord progression:
A min - F Maj - C Maj - G Maj
Our concern for now is the letter in each of these chords (we'll discuss the other information in an upcoming project). The letters in these chord names are the root of the chord, and will serve as the blueprint for our bass line.
Here is how we're going to complete this project:
Download the 3.3 Bass Line Organizer.
Compose a one-measure drum groove, following our usual rules of drumbeat composition.
Write the rhythm for the bass line using one of the three relationships between the kick drum and the bass (bass playing the same time as the kick, more frequently, or less frequently).
The rhythm will be the same for all 4 bass parts.
The rhythm will be notated using the name of the bass note for each measure. Don't forget to use dashes for sustain. We'll use an octave indicator as well - in this case we'll be using 1. So our bass line for the A minor measure might looks something like this:
Time to record your bass lines! Here's how:
Double click on the downloaded .zip file to extract the project, and then double click the icon to open the project.
Record your drums on the track below the chords. Feel free to adjust tempos as needed. If you wish to record your drums across multiple tracks, you can duplicate the drum track by pressing Command-D.
Record your bass line on the bass track.
Save your project and upload to Schoology.
