Understanding Your Paycheck
Understanding Your Paycheck
Your pay stubs help you track your income; tracking how much money you earned, how much money you took home, and how much of your earnings were given to any with-holdings
Gross Pay
This is the total amount that you earned before any with-holdings have been taken
Net Pay
This is how much of your earnings are yours to take home, after taxes and other with-holdings have been removed
Taxes
The amount of federal taxes withheld from your paycheck will vary depending on how many exemptions you claimed when you filed your W-4 tax form
State taxes will usually be listed very close to federal tax.
Other With-holdings
Social Security is a federally mandated payment to the U.S. Social Security Administration, which supports people in retirement. Employers also contribute to social security.
Medicare (FICA) is a program that helps with medical payments and billing for people who are eligible for social security.
