LKDSB Math Resources

‘Fostering Success for Every Student, Every Day’

Welcome to the LKDSB Math Resources website.  This website was created to support teachers as we work to build a community of mathematical thinkers.  A large focus of this website involves Lawson’s continua, as well as, high impact instructional practices to support mathematical learning.

The information and understanding of how students progress using the strategies, has been built through the collaborative work of dedicated Lambton Kent classroom teachers and program staff. We hope you find this resource easy to navigate and a useful resource to support your students in their learning journey.

Please be sure to check back frequently as the team is continuing to update and add information regularly.

Mathematical Think Alouds are high impact instructional practices that allow students to demonstrate their mathematical thinking.  These think alouds can occur in many forms.   The LKDSB Elementary Program team is supporting teachers by providing sample think alouds so teachers have a better understanding of the difference between the types of think alouds and can use these samples directly with their classes.

As part of the LKDSB Board Math Action Plan, all teachers, in all grade levels are asked to complete Number Talks with classes at least 2x per week.   Sample Number Talks can be found in the above Sample Think Aloud links.

Knowledgehook is a fantastic teacher resource and assessment tool.  There are games shows and missions that can be assigned to classes or individual students.  Knowledgehook is directly linked to the Ontario Curriculum, comes with ready prepared activities or can be customized by you.  The data collection regarding student understanding and achievement is powerful and can help inform "where to next" for classes and individual students.  Teachers can also use the program as a resource by using the "lightbulb" on the expectations or questions to learn more about the math background for the question/expectation,  student misconceptions and potential intervention supports.

The 2020 version of the  Ontario Mathematics curriculum is a teacher's first stop for planning their mathematics program in their classroom.  Provided below is a quick reference chart that will help you navigate to the Teacher Supports of the curriculum faster.  These can also be accessed as a PDF that you can save, organized horizontally or vertically.
