I break key idea 8.4 into two units. Everything in bold italics is taught in the WWI Unit*
1) The long-term causes of World War I included militarism, imperialism, alliances, and nationalism. These were all forms of competitions between the countries of Europe. Competition led to tension, that made Europe like a powder keg ready to explode. The short-term cause of WWI was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand.
2) New technology and mass production made this war deadlier than any war before it. Soldiers fought in trenches in an endless back and forth with little results.
3) The United States declared neutrality at the outbreak of WWI. However, the U.S. did send supplies to the British. The United States declared war in 1917 after the sinking of the Lusitania and the Zimmerman Telegram.
4) The war ended after 4 years with an armistice or cease-fire. President Woodrow Wilson tried to convince the leaders of Great Britain, Italy, and France to write a peace treaty that would create long lasting peace. Instead, they wrote the Treaty of Versailles that harshly punished the Germans for starting the war.
5) The unresolved issues of World War I would lead to World War II twenty years later.
