*I break key idea 8.3 into two units. Everything in bold italics is taught in the Expansion Overseas Unit*
1) The economic motivation for expanding powers overseas was acquiring natural resources and new markets (we could take resources from our colonies without asking and force them to buy our stuff).
2) The social motivation for expanding powers overseas was because Americans thought their cultural was superior to others.
3) The political motivation for expanding overseas was to compete with powerful European countries.
4) The United States gained several colonies in the Spanish-American War, including Puerto Rico, the Philippines, and Guam, as well as forming a protectorate over Cuba. The United States also purchased Alaska from Russia and toppled the queen in Hawaii.
5) The United States began to actively involve itself in Latin America. President Theodore Roosevelt order the building of the Panama Canal and claimed that the United States would intervene if any European country tried make a claim in Latin America (called the Roosevelt Corollary to the Monroe Doctrine).
