In writing class this year, students will be learning about a variety of writing styles, while integrating the social studies curriculum. Students will rotate within the WRITE workshop model in which students will be writing with a teacher, reading & investigating, and typing & editing. Throughout this workshop model, students will improve their team building and problem solving skills. They will be responsible for keeping a digital writing portfolio, using Google Classroom, to respond to daily topics and create writing pieces. Students will work with peers to edit work, as well as with a teacher. We will be working on improving their typing skills, along with their handwriting. Embedded within daily writing lessons, students will also work on using proper grammar, punctuation, capitalization, and spelling. Writing lessons will follow the Lucy Calkins program in which students are expected to write in each of the following styles: Narrative, Argumentative, and Research. Within each writing unit, there will be a strong tie to the social studies curriculum.
Throughout the year, students and parents are able to access written work using Google Drive. The revision and editing history of each document can also be viewed to verify that students are moving through the steps in the writing process, resulting in their best work. This digital portfolio will be organized into folders within Google Drive and can be accessed throughout their future years in the Liverpool School District.
