Reading Workshop

Reader’s Workshop is an instructional model for reading that emphasizes students’ independence and allows them to become engaged, motivated and therefore successful readers outside the classroom.

The format of the reading workshop focuses on the readers coming together with the text as an intellectual community and improving the reading experience as well as deepening a student’s understanding of the text.

Instructional goals are based on 6th Level ELA Common Core Learning Standards listed on the report card as well as individual student needs.

The students will read many fiction and non-fiction texts over the course of the year and are encouraged to do as good readers do in exploring different genres, authors and texts. They will be focusing on noticing specific points in a story that help reveal the author’s purpose, themes, character’s motives as well as activate connections into their own lives.

Routines of the Reading Workshop include:

  • Independent Reading
  • Read-Aloud
  • Whole Class Instruction to Model Reading Strategies
  • Small Group Instruction
  • Individual Reading Conferences
  • Share Time

The student Reader’s Response Journal is utilized for keeping track of independent books, setting personal reading goals, reading strategy practice and response to text.

*Families are encouraged to ask their child about their independent books, read alongside them and have conversations about the text. This is one way to increase authentic learning for our students and support their growth as readers.
