Social Studies Curriculum: The Eastern Hemisphere
The course of study in sixth grade emphasizes the interdependence of all people, specifically in the Eastern Hemisphere. Lessons and activities draw on the specific examples of nations and regions in the Eastern Hemisphere, focusing on ancient civilizations, chosen by the Liverpool School District. Those regions are listed below.
Crucial periods of history are also discussed within these regions, such as the middle ages, renaissance, revolution, and reformation. The curriculum takes a social science perspective, emphasizing the interaction of geography and economics. The core disciplines of geography and economics are used to develop and draw relationships and understanding about social/cultural, political, and historical aspects of life in Eastern Hemisphere and the "legacies" these civilizations have left on today's world. Historical insights are used as a means of developing a total perspective rather than an organizing framework. Learning units based on the history, geography, economics, governments, religions/belief systems, and cultures of the Eastern Hemisphere will reinforce the above-mentioned ideas.
