Focus
The projects on this topic focused on those things that could students felt could be improved in our school. Students brainstormed some improvements that they thought could help their school community and then directed initial questions while researching their topics to either Superintendent Platt, Principal Pepe, Principal Stigliano or Colleen Kolacki from our Lunch Service. Dr. Stigliano and Ms. Kolacki were then able to come to hear their presentations in-person. Click on the Yellow Buttons below to view the student presentations. Also read about what progress or feedback was provided regarding their suggestions.
This group was interested in helping students make healthy options when making their lunch purchases at school. They were able to interview Ms. Kolacki from Simplified Culinary about ways that this could be done.
Team Members: Charlotte S., Henny and Lucy B.
This group felt that there were not enough gluten free options offered in our school lunch program. Ms. Kolacki mentioned that there are quite a number and she brought samples of those items for the student to try.
Team Members: Kiran, Maddie, Maya and Paige B.
They were able to partner with Ms. Kolacki to have a Healthy Option offered on the menu once a week and they are also going to try to have special stickers on the food provided to inform students about whether something is gluten free.
This group wanted to start an After-School Babysitting Class. They presented the reasons why this would be beneficial and logistics for having the Class.
Team Members: Charlotte D., Jordan and Noelle
This group also wanted the After-School Babysitting Class. They presented the possible solution and made a recommendation that even once the certification class was complete, there still be a group of "babysitters" that met to discuss what they were learning and sharing tips.
Team Members: Elena, Julianna, Laura and Leah
Dr. Stigliano reached out to the PTO about possibly sponsoring this club for after-school hours. They are currently working on the logistics of offering this activity to the 4th graders.
This group wanted to ensure that all the Markham Sports teams had First Aid Kits for their use during practices and games. Dr. Stigliano mentioned that she had spoken to Mr. Pepe and while the teams have First Aid Kits already, what might be helpful would be for them to propose what should be in the Kit and then work with the Markham nurse to ensure that those items were always in their Kits for their use.
Team Members: Austen, Hadley, Reesa and Yardley
This team felt that there should be more options for activities at Point Road for Recess. They believed, however, that they should be offered primarily to the older students as they were outgrowing some of the playground equipment. After conversations with Dr. Stigliano and Mr. Hilla, two new activities were agreed to and the PTO has generously agreed to purchasing the equipment and storage containers.
Team Members: Declan and Joey
This group wanted to create a Point Road News Team. This group would give reports on what is happening around the school in a news format. This would be open to only 3rd and 4th graders. Dr. Stigliano felt this was something that could be done but space and sponsorship needed to be obtained first.
Team Members: Addison, Maven, Paige and Roman
