Genius Hour Turned Action Research
We're excited to share the 4th grade projects that were a result of their Genius Hour/Action Research time during this school year. This program was different from what your children experienced last year, and we believe it was an engaging and educational adventure for them.
What is Genius Hour? Genius Hour is a special time during the school week where students have the opportunity to explore their passions, interests, and creativity. For 4th graders, this was on Day 1 or Day 6 during their Spanish/STEM time. It was a chance for them to become mini-researchers and problem-solvers.
This year, we focused on research and applying what they learned last year to create solutions for real-life problems. Our 4th graders had the opportunity to choose a project related to one of the following areas: ● School Environment ● Local Land Resources ● Local Water Resources ● Local Citizenship ● Local Healthcare
Students were able to choose to work individually or in teams. We believe this choice empowered them to collaborate, learn from one another, and make the most of their unique skills and interests.
Between October to February, students were guided through the research process, project development, technology integration and presentation skills. They had the opportunity to interact directly with people in our town and school to ask questions to help guide their inquiry. They then presented their findings and proposals to the real-life problems they identified to those people that could help them implement their recommendations.
We were impressed with the creative and innovative ideas that students came up with to address issues they felt were important in their community. The end result was that they were able to make a positive impact on our school and community. Check out their presentations and read about the positive impacts that have already been implemented. We hope it will be an impactful reminder to them that they can make change by participating in community decision making and encourage some future leaders!
