Focus
The projects on this topic focused on those things that could students felt could be improved in our town that would have an impact on the environment. Students brainstormed some ways that they thought they could help their school community get involved in cleaning up the town. Initial questions were sent to Bonnie Akey who is the head of the Little Silver Environmental Commission to help students solidify their proposals. Mrs. Akey was then able to come to our school to hear their presentations in-person. Below are the student presentations and what has already been accomplished due to their initiative.
This group was interested in how students could get more involved in picking up litter around town. They were able to interview Mrs. Akey for our Point Road Podcast about what the Environmental Commission was all about and how students could get involved. Mrs. Akey mentioned that she is trying to get a grant so that the Green Team can be revived at Point Road School.

This team felt that our local waterways were being impacted by all the trash that is in the roadways that then runs into the drainage openings when it rains. This has an impact on the underwater ecosystem. They investigated solutions and prices to present. Mrs. Akey felt that this was something they could look into but the town always needs to consider the costs to ensure taxes are not increased. She liked the idea of having a town clean-up which is something that could be looked into for the future.

This team felt that our local waterway system could use a clean up. They suggested a clean up day. Mrs. Akey agreed but suggested they start with a particular area like Santelle Park. She mentioned the Public Works department might be able to help as they have with these kinds of efforts in the past. It was recommended that they reach out to Public Works and the Environmental Committee to help get this organized.

This group was concerned about all the litter and pollution that is in our ocean waters. They recommended that there should be a group of 4th graders that would volunteer to go to a Clean Ocean Action Beach Sweep. Mrs. Akey suggested that maybe they could also attend Eco-Fest and maybe the Podcast would be a way to encourage the 4th graders to attend.

This group created a proposal for more trees to be planted in Little Silver along with some recommendations of the kinds of trees that might flourish. Mrs. Akey told them she was always interested in ways to get people living in town to plant more trees. She recommended that they present their plan to the Shade Tree Commission and that maybe they could help to get something done.

This team came up with the idea of having a Farmers Market in Little Silver where local people to the town could sell their homemade could not only sell their left over vegetables from the community garden but could also sell homemade items. They learned that currently, those vegetables normally go to Lunch Break so they recommended that then it become more of a market for selling homemade goods and baked items. It was mentioned that this was currently offered at Sickles market. With that no longer the case, it might be an idea that is ready to begin!
