A Note From C10 Program Manager, Mr. Cardenas (He/Him/El) :
Dear C10 Leaders and LIT Family Members,
My name is Mr. Cardenas, and my purpose in your life is to fight for the opportunities you need and provide you with the love, support, and development needed to take advantage of them.
I grew up in East Las Vegas, experiencing firsthand the challenges faced by our community. When I started at Sunrise Mountain High in 2013, the school was undergoing reform due to low graduation rates. In the first month, almost 200 students were suspended or expelled, including many I knew. We were pushed to graduate but not to aim higher. As an undocumented student, I also struggled to navigate the complexities of college applications and FAFSA. Undeterred, I collabortated with teachers in my school to find a way to make things work for me. I graduated as valedictorian in 2017 and earned a full scholarship to UNLV.
In college, my dedication to community service deepened. I became a fellow with the Nevada Institute on Teaching and Educator Preparation, Director of Education Programming at a local nonprofit, a youth commissioner on the Nevada Commission on Mentoring, and contributed to various statewide political campaigns.
Currently, I teach Social Studies at Rancho High School, working closely with multilingual and special education students, and serve as your program manager at Leaders in Training.
I had to figure everything out on my own at your age to reach for my dreams— you have an entire team of people working for you to make yours happen. They will only become a reality if you take advantage of them, though.
It has taken you a lot of work to get to this point, and it will take a ton more to get to where you want to go, but throughout the year we will have a lot of fun and make great memories doing it.
I can’t wait to see what you make of all the talents, wisdom, and passion that already lives inside of you.
In partnership,
Sebastian Cardenas
