Day 4 - Feb 16

Culture: What is Whiteness?

"The fact that they have not yet been able to do this—to face their history, to change their lives—hideously menaces this country. Indeed, it menaces the entire world. White man, hear me! History, as nearly no one seems to know, is not merely something to be read. And it does not refer merely, or even principally, to the past. On the contrary, the great force of history comes from the fact that we carry it within us, are unconsciously controlled by it in many ways, and history is literally present in all that we do."

 ― James Baldwin

“In this country, American means white. Everybody else has to hyphenate.”

 ― Toni Morrison

REFLECTION FOR THE DAY

If you are White, how many privileges/ advantages have you thought about? How have those impacted your access to resources, your cross-racial relationships, or the values you have internalized?

If you are a person of color, how has your culture been impacted by White culture? How do you handle conflict (different values, experiences, access, etc.)?

After today's challenge work:

Did you have any ‘a-ha’ moment?

Did you feel any discomfort?

What will you do differently based on your challenge today?
