This is important because if they never would have attacked the Fort Sumner the war would have never happened. The attack on fort Sumner was, an attack on a Military base that sat on an island. The south was upset so they retaliated which started what we know as the civil war. They began firing their cannons at the fort. Eventually the fort soldiers began firing back but ended up surrendering.
